 What is LASON?

Latin American Studies Online (LASON) is an interdisciplinary online learning system offering didactically structured content about Latin America for students and teachers alike. The aim of the learning system is to create a virtual learning space counterbalancing the lack of a "Department of Latin American Studies" at Austrian universities.

The learning systems’ authors come from the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna), the Department of Geography (University of Innsbruck), the Department of Economic Geography (University of Economics, Vienna), the Department of History (University of Vienna), and the Austrian Latin American Institute (LAI). The latter is a non-profit organisation and the only institution in Austria offering a master program on Interdisciplinary Latin American Studies.

Besides providing a variety of learning and teaching materials in this field of studies, LASON also wants to facilitate and intensify contacts between students and teachers in Latin America and Austria. Furthermore it can be used by the general public as an information pool about Latin America.

The design of LASON is based on a technically "low-level" approach in order to facilitate the content production as well as the access to a free and open learning system.

A database, providing information on research and researchers in the field of Latin American Studies in Austria, complements the learning materials.
