Die 1950er Jahre waren eine Zeit des wissenschaftlichen und politischen Aufbruchs. Celso Furtado, der einflußreichste brasilianische Strukturalist, hielt rückblickend fest:
“I was convinced that we in CEPAL had advanced into unknown territory, and were occupying vanguard positions. I now began to realize that we would be attacked by overwhelmingly powerful forces and that we would probably get a shock when the research potential which was being built up in the United States was unleashed ... But we had gained a slight advantage and nothing could convince me that Goddess Fortune was not on our side” (zitiert in Lehmann 1990: 6f).
